Terry
Fisk is the Co-Host of The
Unexplained TV and radio series as
well the Co-Author of The Road Guide
to Haunted Locations series. |
Chad Lewis and Terry
Fisk are paranormal researchers who travel all
over the Midwest investigating ghosts and other
things that go bump in the night. Recently Suite
101 talked to Terry Fisk about what sends
shivers down his spine.
Becoming a
Paranormal Investigator
As a child Terry
Fisk also had an interest in all things
paranormal, but when he got older that seemed to
disappear. That is, until ten years ago when
Fisk was visiting a relatives gravesite and made
a scary discovery. When the pictures that Fisk
and his brother had taken at the gravesite were
developed the two noticed an unexplainable mist
around the tombstones.
“That sparked my
curiosity again,” Fisk said.
Now, many years
later Fisk joined forces with paranormal
investigator Chad Lewis to reach out to those
who have had their own experiences or even those
who plan on chasing down ghosts.
Fisk and Lewis have
been in collaboration on many projects such as
The Unexplained radio program, The Unexplained
television series, and a large number of books
on the subject as well. In the past few years in
fact, the number of followers of The Unexplained
Research website has grown in number to over
three thousand members.
Digging into
the Unknown
Fisk and
Lewis have written many books providing a road
guide to haunted locations all over the Midwest.
Their idea for the books actually came simply
from visiting most of the places they were soon
writing about.
“We’d get lost
trying to find these places,” he said adding
that then the idea sparked to make it easier for
others to do their own researching by helping
them first get there.
Fisk admits that
they hope to eventually make haunted road guides
for all fifty states in the future.
Spine
Chilling Paranormal Research
Despite researching
old abandoned buildings, haunted houses, and
cemeteries Fisk doesn’t normally get frightened.
“I’m not normally
scared,” he said but he added what does creep
him out is the feeling of being isolated.
Fisk also says that
there are many steps when starting up an
investigation. Fisk and Lewis often research the
background on a place that is said to be haunted
and if the place has a long history of eye
witness accounts that is a place they are most
likely to choose.
After choosing the
location Fisk and Lewis may spend an entire
night in the place if it seems worthy enough.
There are times that
Fisk and Lewis do not always agree on which
cases to follow through on however.
“When that happens I
can always investigate them myself,” Fisk said.
Different
Perspectives on a Haunting Investigation
Fisk and
Lewis have different backgrounds which make
their perspectives on the paranormal quite
different as well. While Lewis has a degree in
Applied Psychology Fisk has studied Philosophy
and Religion. It is Fisk's belief that
spirituality and the paranormal go hand in hand.
Fisk admits that by
having these different backgrounds that Lewis
and himself have varied opinions.
“[It’s like] looking
at the same things through different eyes,” he
said.
Fisk eventually
hopes to work with more physics and mediums with
his future work since most of the mediums he has
previously worked with were legit.
Do-It-Yourself Investigating
Fisk also
offers some advice to would-be paranormal
investigators.
“Buy the book,” Fisk
laughs adding “if you are looking for something
to happen you may be better going to a place
with a better history.”
Fisk also says to
bring a notepad, and always remember to bring a
camera. Fisk says if the person is the one
living in a haunted place it is best to keep a
journal of the events that happen there.
The most important
thing when investigating a place that may be
haunted according to Fisk is not to do anything
illegal and to be respectful of the location.
If ghosts or the
paranormal become a problem Fisk points out that
himself and Lewis can be contacted on the
website.
“We are always
looking for new cases,” Fisk added.
